Cambodia has been a country at the very top of my list of places to visit for what seems like a very long time. The country is best known, unfortunately for the rule of terror in the 1970’s of the Khmer Rouge who left almost 2 million people dead and millions more starving and malnourished.
Thankfully, the Cambodia of the 21st Century is a much calmer place. Buddhism is everywhere, the people are kind, gentle and generous, although very poor. The history is incredibly rich, with over 1200 years of Khmer tradition, and ancient ruins are scattered all over the country.
I found it to be a very safe place to visit and loved the company of the Cambodian people.
It’s a country struggling to keep up with the rest of the boom in south-east Asia and while is has a long way to go, is well on the right course to becoming a highlight for visitors to the region.
It has huge tourism potential, but I can only hope that the government handles this potential in a responsible manner, to help better the lives of the Cambodian people.
