I first visited Morocco in 1993 at the start of a year long trans-African adventure. I was enthralled by the country’s delicate mix of Arab, European and Sub-Saharan African cultures. By simply being there I felt that I was a part of a cultural landscape that went back thousands of years. It was as if I were in a living history museum. I was fascinated by it and always thought I’d return to dig a little deeper.
It took me 18 years to return, but I finally did it at the beginning of 2012. Starting in the historic city of Marrakech, I travelled through the country, into the High Atlas Mountains, the Valley of 1000 Kasbahs and the Sahara desert near the border with Algeria. From there, I ventured north, visiting the ancient city of Fez before seeing a completely different side of the country in Casablanca, Morocco’s financial and most modern city where I experienced a delightful mix of east meets west.
Morocco is a wonderful, culturally rich country to visit. Its tolerant form of Islam and its modern infrastructure make it an easy, safe and very rewarding destination.
