I visited Gambia and Senegal in late 2001. These two similar, but very distinct countries are easily accessible due to easy access from both the UK and France. Tourism is well developed along the Atlantic coast of both countries, but inland, away from the resort hotels, tourists and people who make money from tourism is a completely different place. Flying into Dakar, Senegal’s lively capital, I traveled south into Gambia, ventured all the way upcountry as far as it was practical to go, crossed back into Senegal and returned to Dakar. I thoroughly explored both countries, enjoying the culture, people, food and vibrant, colorful markets of the region. I traveled to some very little visited parts of both countries, experiencing both countries from a very different perspective than that of the millions of tourists who visit the coastal areas and never venture beyond their resorts.
