Borneo is a huge island encompassing parts of 3 countries - Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei. It contains some of the planet’s most bio-diverse regions of tropical rainforest, and although logging is a massive problem, areas of the island are gradually being set aside by all three governments to be protected as national parks. It’s a truly amazing place where tribes living in traditional longhouses still continue a hunter/gatherer existence, albeit aided with the use of modern technology.
Malaysian Borneo houses one of only a handful of Orangutan rehabilitation facilities in the world.
I finally visited in 2005, after a lifetime of dreaming about the place. I was not disappointed.
