I’ve been to Puerto Rico literally dozens of times, mostly for work, but I’ve also taken a few trips for pleasure. It’s a US Dependent Territory, where the US Dollar is the official currency and English one of the two official languages along with Spanish. That’s where the connection to the US ends. Visiting Puerto Rico is truly a unique cultural experience. Puerto Ricans are very proud of their roots and their island. It’s a spectacularly beautiful place, covered in lush, tropical vegetation. Its capital San Juan is home to a lovingly restored 500 year old historic center which is without a doubt one of the most beautiful urban settings in the western hemisphere.
Only one hour drive out of San Juan is the El Yunque National Park, the only tropical rainforest national park in the US. It is an easily accessible day trip from the city and displays the raw beauty of the best of nature that the island has to offer.
